The refrigerator compressor is the thing that compresses the refrigerant gas. It raises the unit’s pressure and temperature so that the the heat coils outside of the refrigerator can dissolve the heat of the pressurization. While cooling, the refrigerant becomes a liquid and flows through an expansion valve. As it’s doing this, the liquid refrigerant is able to move to a low-pressure zone from a high-pressure zone. Due to evaporation, it absorbs eat and this makes it cold. The coils within the refrigerator let the unit absorb heat which makes the inside of the refrigerator cold.

Basically, if your refrigerator compressor breaks, you can no longer cool your refrigerator properly which means that all of your food can go to waste and spoil. This is why it’s so important to be able to figure out whether or not the problem is from the compressor and then to act accordingly. This generally involves calling someone with more knowledge about the subject than the average person would have access to or the ability to really and uniquely understand it.
You can figure out whether or not the compressor is broken by listening when your refrigerator is warming up. If you hear a humming sound and possibly a click coming from the compressor, then it’s definitely time to check on your compressor. First you would want to check your compressor start relay and if that checks out okay, then the compressor is probably bad. The start relay is actually pretty simple to test. All you have to do is remove it from the compressor’s control pad and shaking it. Much like a light bulb, if you hear it rattling, then it’s fried and unusable.
Once you’ve confirmed that what you’re dealing with is a bad compressor, you’re left with two options. These would be to either replace the compressor and pay for the installation fee or replace your refrigerator. The reason that this choice is actually a viable option is that compressors don’t generally come cheap. Sometimes you’ll be lucky and run across one that’s priced nicely but more often than not, this will not be the case.
As long as it’s just your average refrigerator, you are actually probably better off simply replacing that instead of the compressor. However, if it’s a Sub Zero or something that you’re very attached to, just shop around for compressor prices. Keep in mind that a broken compressor is definitely a huge problem as it will not cool your refrigerator. Which, as we all know, is exactly why you bought he thing in the first place. If you don’t take the proper care of your refrigerator than you might as well go and dig a hole for the ice box that will keep your food cold in the winter months and lukewarm in the summer months.
